What the women say? Past, present, and future of Resolution 1325 on its 25th anniversary

A session bringing together mediators and activists from Palestine, Tunisia and Spain to mark 25 years of the Women, Peace and Security agenda and share practical insights on participation, protection of women human rights defenders, and the risks of co-optation and militarisation.

Speakers

Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini

Founder and Executive Director of ICAN, a global reference in women, peace and security.

With three decades of experience as a peace strategist, she leads from ICAN the Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership (WASL), active in over 40 countries, and the Innovative Peace Fund. Co-author of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, she was the first Senior Gender and Inclusion Expert in UN mediation. Recipient of the MBE.

Lucy Talgieh

Prominent figure at the Wi’am Palestinian Conflict Transformation Center, Deputy Mayor of Bethlehem, and member of the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network.

Advocate for peace, equality and participatory governance. City councillor since 2017 and Deputy Mayor since 2025, she coordinates mediation programmes at Wi’am and promotes the implementation of Resolution 1325. Member of BPW Palestine. BA in Religious Studies (Bethlehem University) and MA in Democracy and Human Rights (Birzeit University).

Maria Villellas

President of the Spanish section of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF)

Co-director of the School for a Culture of Peace (UAB), political scientist and PhD in Gender Studies. Specialist in the Women, Peace and Security agenda, focusing on women’s participation in peace processes and conflicts in South Asia. Member of the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network. Recipient of the Concepción Gimeno Flaquer Award.

Amel Arbaoui

President of the Citizens’ Association Joussour of Tunisia

Professor and women’s rights activist, she has presided over Joussour (AJC) since 2015, working for the empowerment of women and youth through training in rights, social participation and economic autonomy. From her leadership, she promotes social justice, equality and the prevention of violent extremism.

Maria Peix Batet

Activist with DonesXDones and PhD from the UB

Antimilitarist feminist activist with DonesXDones. PhD from the University of Barcelona. She has worked in Africa, the Mediterranean, and Latin America developing, implementing, and evaluating diagnoses, studies, public policies, and social and urban transformation projects. She specializes in gender and diversity mainstreaming and evaluation. Currently, she coordinates the International Cooperation Service in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.
